Saw Palmetto is a shrubby palm that can be found in sandy soils throughout the southeastern United States and part of the Mediterranean . It has dark, olive-shaped fruit, or berries, that are picked when ripe, partially dried and used medicinally. Traditionally the leaves have been used by Native Americans to stuff mattresses, to thatch roofing and to weave into hats and baskets.

Centuries ago, native Americans discovered that the berry has a diuretic action, and so began using it for urinary conditions. More recently it has become popular for its effects in Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), and it is the fatty acids, called sterols, that have been found to be one of the key constituents.

The prostate gland is located around the urethra, and an enlargement can result in some annoying symptoms, such as frequent urination, particularly at night, pain and burning on urination, and difficulty in starting and stopping urination. Many men find relief from some or all of these symptoms taking Saw Palmetto.

Therapeutic Use

Saw Palmetto was traditionally used by native Americans for the temporary relief of frequent urination in adult males, particularly at night. Saw Palmetto appears to possess 5-á-reductase inhibitory activity (thereby inhibiting the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone). It is the increase of dihydrotestosterone in the blood in the mature male that contributes to BPH (Benign prostatic hyperplasia)

There are a number of sources that have contributed to the names of this herb. The shape of the Dandelion leaves were thought to be shaped like lion’s teeth and so it was called ‘dent de lion’ by the French, which later became know as ‘dandelion’. In early Western Herbal Medicine dandelion was used for a wide range of ailments and so became known as ‘the official remedy for disorders’. It is from this reputation that part of the botanical name originates. ‘Taraxacum’ comes from the Greek ‘taraxos’, meaning disorder, and ‘akos’ meaning remedy.

According to the Doctrine of Signatures (the ancient philosophy where it was thought that the physical characteristics of a plant reveal potential healing value) the flower of the dandelion is yellow in colour, linking it to the liver’s yellow bile. It is from this that is was found to be useful in supporting the liver. In addition the plant has juicy roots, stems and leaves, linking it to urine production.

Today dandelion is used for its diuretic, slight laxative, and cholagogue (assist the release of bile) properties.

Therapeutic Use

Traditionally dandelion has been used in England , Europe and North America as a liver tonic and to aid digestion, being particularly beneficial to those with a poor appetite. Dandelion may also assist in relieving mild fluid retention.

Dong Quai has been used extensively for hundreds of years in Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine for the female reproductive system. In Europe Angelica was planted in gardens or kept in cupboards as it was thought to be one of the only herbs that witches never used, and its presence was considered a defence against charges of witchcraft.

Some of its primary uses have included dysmenorrhoea, amenorrhoea, and symptoms related to menopause. Some of the properties that have been attributed to the herb include anti-inflammatory and tonic to the female reproductive system. It also has mild laxative properties.

In addition to its use in female reproductive conditions Dong Quai was also used during the 17 th century for respiratory ailments. According to the Doctrine of Signatures (the old philosophy that the appearance of a herb can give some indication to its healing benefits) plants that are hollow-stemmed such as Dong Quai, were considered beneficial to the respiratory system. This is not an indication that it is commonly used today.
