Saw Palmetto is a shrubby palm that can be found in sandy soils throughout the southeastern United States and part of the Mediterranean . It has dark, olive-shaped fruit, or berries, that are picked when ripe, partially dried and used medicinally. Traditionally the leaves have been used by Native Americans to stuff mattresses, to thatch roofing and to weave into hats and baskets.

Centuries ago, native Americans discovered that the berry has a diuretic action, and so began using it for urinary conditions. More recently it has become popular for its effects in Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), and it is the fatty acids, called sterols, that have been found to be one of the key constituents.

The prostate gland is located around the urethra, and an enlargement can result in some annoying symptoms, such as frequent urination, particularly at night, pain and burning on urination, and difficulty in starting and stopping urination. Many men find relief from some or all of these symptoms taking Saw Palmetto.

Therapeutic Use

Saw Palmetto was traditionally used by native Americans for the temporary relief of frequent urination in adult males, particularly at night. Saw Palmetto appears to possess 5-á-reductase inhibitory activity (thereby inhibiting the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone). It is the increase of dihydrotestosterone in the blood in the mature male that contributes to BPH (Benign prostatic hyperplasia)

Active Ingredients

Each ‘preservative free’ capsule contains 550mg of Serenoa serrulata berry powder.

Dosage

For adults: take two capsules with a meal twice daily.
